Engineering management II (project management)

Objectives The student is expected to develop an understanding of the principles of financial management; a working knowledge of the structure of engineering contracts; familiarity with project planning techniques for scheduling activities, allocating resources and optimising time/cost. The student will develop the ability to identify the relevant information required in project evaluation and planning; use project planning software packages; read project scheduling charts to determine progress and implement corrective action where required.
Synopsis The project environment: markets, human resources, labour relations, economic factors and government policies; selection of the optimum project; the structure and selection of the project team; planning and cost control techniques; construction management and project safety management; decision making related to project management; the use of modern computer project planning techniques; project management case studies. This subject will normally be conducted in the part-time and distance education mode. In addition to the provision of formal study materials, lectures and tutorials will be provided including presentations by specialist lecturers.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 60% * Assignments: 40%
