Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate knowledge about major causes of exceptionality; knowledge and understanding of the specific needs exceptional children may have in early childhood and primary school settings; the ability to plan and implement appropriate objectives for exceptional young children; the ability to plan and implement programs which balance the teaching and learning needs of exceptional young children with those of other children in the same settings; an awareness of the impact exceptional children may have on their families and implications of that impact for teachers; a commitment to facilitating the integration of exceptional children within early childhood and primary school settings.
Synopsis The purpose of this subject is to prepare students to integrate exceptional children into preschool and school programs. Topics will include an overview of the causes of exceptionality; meeting the needs of children with sensory disabilities; intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities; gifted young children. There will be particular emphasis on issues in integration and the impact on their families of children with special needs.
