Studies of society and environment 2

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have gained knowledge and understandings about the most recent developments in social education, in particular, the Curriculum and Standards Framework series for this area. Students should be able to demonstrate and apply their understandings in the planning of units of work; the setting of aims and objectives; the selection of content and teaching methods; classroom organisation, assessment and evaluation, the planning of scope and sequence charts and the development of focus and contributing questions. Students should have developed an appreciation of the benefits and drawbacks of school-based curriculum development.

Synopsis This subject builds upon the principles and methods introduced in EDN1445 and extends their application to knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and social actions appropriate to middle and senior primary grades. Emphasis will be placed on designing social studies units of work incorporating advanced inquiry skills and key concepts associated with the strands in the Curriculum and Standards Framework series relating to the studies of society and environment.
