Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge and understandings of the major theories about learning; a variety of teaching strategies; the relationship between learning theory and teaching practice. Students should have developed skills which will enable them to teach using a variety of teaching procedures; associate skills with preparing and delivering content specific lessons; analyse teaching and learning episodes to enhance their understanding of particular procedures. Students should have developed values or attitudes in an awareness of the need to be open-minded, intellectually responsible and whole-hearted in their approach to learning; a commitment to the rights of learners as individuals; a willingness to withhold judgement in teaching or learning episodes.
Synopsis The purpose of this subject is to provide an organised and theory-based introduction to education to those with an interest in learning and teaching whether in formal or informal contexts. It is designed for both practising teachers and people not currently teaching who wish to expand their career options in this direction (eg nurses). Topics covered include learning, curriculum, teaching and assessment, and are covered in an interrelated way.
