Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to locate recent developments within the philosophical and theoretical frameworks of different conceptions of the nature, role and function of higher education institutions in the modern community; understand the ways in which the application of research and development in higher education may lead to improvements in the management of individual tertiary institutions; show the ways and means in which administrative practice may be improved and expanded through such an application to deal with the increasingly complex and diverse requirements of institutional management in the current Australian scene.

Synopsis This subject is concerned with the theoretical underpinnings of policy, planning and management in tertiary institutions - universities, colleges and TAFE - and with showing how these relate to the micro-level of individual institutions. The program will attempt to locate recent developments within the philosophical framework of different conceptions of the nature, role and function of higher education institutions in the modern community, but will concentrate on the application of research and development in higher education to improvements in the management of individual tertiary institutions.
