Advanced practicum in language teaching: TESOL

* Corequisites: 15 days teaching practice

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a basic understanding of the second language acquisition principles which influence current classroom teaching approaches in TESOL; have developed a reflective approach to the teaching-learning of ESOL; have developed a critical analysis of classroom practices of ESOL teachers; be able to develop, implement and evaluate a sequence of lessons for a range of learners and learning skills in a specific educational setting; be able to monitor and document their students' progress and development in English.

Synopsis This subject provides the background knowledge and skills required to function as an effective ESOL teacher in a range of educational settings. It aims to assist students in the planning and implementation of a variety of lesson types within a communicative/interactive approach to ESOL teaching and learning. It also provides opportunities for critical reflection about best practice in TESOL classrooms and for the application of theoretical principles underlying SLA in school and adult learning curriculum frameworks.
