Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should understand the social and institutional context of education policy and practice; understand the relationship between education and context; have become familiar with different perspectives on education and context.
Synopsis This subject will examine issues and debates which are changing the way our society educates the next generation. It considers the selection, organisation and distribution of educational practice through different social institutions in order to understand the changing patterns of educational provision and their social consequences. These issues reinforce the importance of considering education in context, but raise questions about the way `education' and `context' are conceptualised. Such empirical and theoretical questions will be addressed by an examination of the experience, politics and theory of context. Starting time to be negotiated at first session.
Assessment Seminar: 25%
* Research paper (8000 words): 75%
