Adult pedagogies and curriculum for the workplace

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, participants should be able to examine theories and practices associated with adult learning, curriculum design and development for the workplace; review a range of adult learning theories and pedagogies including experiential and action learning, flexible learning, critical and feminist pedagogies and transformative learning theory; examine practices in both work-related learning and curriculum development for the workplace with a view to developing critique and/or aspects of good practice; analyse pedagogical practices which attempt to utilise the workplace environment and integrate work performance; examine and analyse case studies to determine the critical characteristics of the processes and practices for developing integrated and contextualised curriculum.
Synopsis This subject is designed for those interested in issues, debates and practices associated with teaching and learning and curriculum design and development for the workplace. Relevant theory and research are examined along with implications for practice. The subject looks at adult learning theories, relevant strands of study within adult education, and curriculum development and pedagogies for work-related learning. Participants will be encouraged to explore curriculum and pedagogies that are suitable for their area within the adult and vocational field and to make comparisons across a range of subject areas, occupations and levels. This subject offers a chance to research and study cases of innovation and exemplary practice related to adult learning, work-related learning and vocational education and training.
