Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate competence in a range of financial management skills listed below; understand the relationship between financial management, planning and budgeting; critically appraise the current theories of financial management and be familiar with computer tools for the effective management of financial resources.
Synopsis This subject is designed to meet the concerns of senior administrators and middle-level managers with the key issues of resource allocation and management at the micro or institutional level of the school, college or university - private and public. It examines both the theoretical and practical issues in the allocation and control of financial resources in the various types of institutions, under expanding, contracting and constant funding. Specific topics will include financial management in non-profit organisations, strategic planning, devolution of responsibility, performance standards, costing, budgeting, cut-back management, cash flow management, financial reports, trends and ratio analysis, the global budget, and the use of cases and other computerised systems. Underlying assumptions concerning accountability, delegation of authority and financial control are explored.
