Counselling, guidance and pastoral care in schools

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify strengths and weaknesses of pastoral care programs in schools; demonstrate knowledge of common emotional and behavioural problems in school-aged children; show an understanding of some counselling approaches used in school settings; demonstrate rudimentary counselling skills necessary for work with children and adolescents who are experiencing a range of difficulties; undertake some personal development work with groups of children; and demonstrate an awareness of the importance of legal and ethical issues in counselling and pastoral care in schools.

Synopsis This subject is designed for teachers interested in counselling and pastoral care in schools. Initially, there is a brief analysis of the nature of pastoral care programs in schools. Common psychological difficulties experienced by children and adolescents are then addressed, with both normal developmental difficulties and some more atypical problems discussed. Students will also have the opportunity to learn some basic counselling skills suitable for use by teachers working with individuals and groups of children.
