Methods and practice of teaching Jewish studies

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate skill in preparing teaching and assessing units of work in Jewish studies; display an understanding of the cultural religious processes which have influenced the contemporary Jewish community and shape of Jewish education in Australia; show an awareness of the significance of good teaching practice and meaningful learning experience relevant to Jewish education.

Synopsis This method subject draws on a broad base. Students will come from a variety of religious, academic and experiential backgrounds. The subject will investigate the nature and aims of Jewish education, appropriate methodologies for Jewish education and how to plan units of work. Specialised electives will allow students to undertake in-depth studies in their chosen fields of Jewish studies whether text-based, history or broadly-based Judaic studies.

Assessment A precondition for a pass in this method is a pass in practice teaching and 80% attendance at all timetabled classes. A satisfactory level of achievement is also required for each of the following tasks
* Work requirements, resources and seminar preparation: 20%
* Essay (1500 words): 30%
* Major assignment: developing a unit of work (2000 words): 50%
