Foundation studies 4: philosophy of education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of widely used educational concepts and their application to the classroom. Students should also be able to demonstrate a basic mastery of the skills of exposition and analysis of a selection of the majority of the concepts of the nature of conceptual analyses; the nature of analytic and empirical assertions; values and how they operate; ideology (or educational philosophy) as a coherent, interdependent, set of values; education as a concept viewed descriptively and prescriptively; indoctrination; punishment and discipline; education as initiation; equality and access; excellence; moral education; authority; competing educational ideologies and their underpinning values (eg Victorian ALP policy in the 1980s v Coalition policy in the 1990s).
Synopsis This subject will cover by lecture and discussion/tutorial type activities the major topics listed in the objectives above. Students will be taught the basic skills of conceptual analysis in order to be able to apply these skills to practical everyday school situations.
