Methods and practice of teaching languages other than English (LOTE) A

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a basic understanding of the SLA principles which influence current classroom teaching approaches in LOTE; produced activities, exercises, units of work, assessment tasks which are related to current classroom practice; developed a reflective approach to the teaching-learning of a LOTE in Victorian secondary schools; developed the capacity to design and implement units of work in the LOTE across Years 7 to 12; developed the ability to work in a variety of programs including mother tongue maintenance and FL and L2 programs. Students should be able to write LOTE curriculum and syllabus documents and to sustain an argument for the compulsory nature of LOTE programs from prep to Year 10; have developed lesson plans with appropriately expressed aims and objectives which take into account the language learning strategies and experiences of a range of learners, in particular classes in a specific school setting; developed strategies for teaching LOTE both face-to-face and through distance education technology.

Synopsis This subject consists of two components: (a) principles of LOTE teaching; and (b) one of the following - teaching Chinese (Mandarin), teaching French, teaching German, teaching Indonesian, teaching Italian, teaching Japanese, teaching Hebrew, teaching Korean, teaching Modern Greek, teaching Spanish. Students must have at least a major sequence in one of the languages listed above and must demonstrate adequate proficiency in spoken and written foreign language skills.

Assessment A precondition for a pass in this method is a pass in practice teaching and 80% attendance at all timetabled classes. A satisfactory level of achievement is also required for each of the following tasks
* Lesson plans: 30%
* Unit of work: 40%
* Weekly journal: 20%
* Written report or argument (1000-1500 words): 10%
