Computer-supported information services

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed greater knowledge and understanding of the application of information technology; an understanding of the use of computers in indexing, in centralised networks and in schools for the cooperative dissemination and in storage of bibliographic information; skills in information retrieval techniques; skills in routine library housekeeping operations; an awareness in the critical examination of the uses being made of computers in information retrieval in schools.

Synopsis This subject aims to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of the application of information technology. Topics covered include the use of computers in indexing, centralised networks, the storage and dissemination of bibliographic information in schools, in information retrieval systems and in routine library housekeeping operations. The subject is taught by lectures, seminars and computer-based practical sessions.

Assessment Two reports (1000 words each): 25% each
* Feasibility study and report (2000 words): 50%
