Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed skills in critically assessing and evaluating the level/s and types of reading done by children both at home and at school; recognising major factors involved in a child's reading development and accordingly planning to extend that development; critical understanding of the range of approaches to reading assessment currently in use in schools and the range of measures both informal and formal which are included in these; developing and using a suitable array of measures with a child in order to identify areas of strength and weakness in reading and to provide assistance appropriately. Students should be able to critically evaluate their own measures and reflect on the usefulness of these.

Synopsis In this subject students will be assisted to recognise and assess characteristics of literacy growth in children to the stage of maturity. A wide range of modern assessment techniques will be discussed across the major dimensions of language-learning - in the context of classroom, whole school and home. Students will develop and apply their own language assessment measures to obtain clear understandings of children's literacy development in a practical situation. Students will also evaluate the effectiveness of their own measures. The subject is taught by lectures, seminars and workshops.

Assessment Three essays (1000 words each): 20% each
