Educational psychology

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be aware of the desirability of teachers keeping up to date with information based on outcomes of psychological research on teaching; be informed on major theories of psychological practice as they affect teachers and teaching; be thoughtful and reflective about claims made for new schemes on teaching and classroom control and be able to evaluate these in a scientific manner.

Synopsis The subject considers the place of particular psychological theories and research in education and their applications in classrooms. Topics covered will include applications of learning theory, the development of self-concept, and thinking about thinking (metacognition). Subject books provide guidance and reading materials.

Assessment Essay (1500 words): 25%
* Practical report (2000 words): 25%
* Examination on prepared topics (two hours): 50%
