Science and health and physical education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed their understanding of the content, structure and function of science, health and physical education; have practised integrating diverse ideas from the different areas and be able to present broad learning experiences to children; have explored ways of motivating and stimulating children's learning; know how to use references and resources in developing classroom experiences; have developed a positive attitude towards teaching science, health and physical education; have actively participated in all activities covered in this subject; and have practised observing and assessing children's learning behaviour.

Synopsis This subject introduces students to important ideas, concepts and processes in the science, health and physical education areas. The notion of a common curriculum will be raised and discussed, and the students will be introduced to the Curriculum Standards Framework series relating to science and health and physical education. Historical changes in these areas will be considered. Teaching strategies which students can use to achieve curriculum outcomes will be an important aspect of the course. issues concerning a pluralist society and gender inclusiveness relevant to the two curriculum areas will also be considered. The subject aims to explore and expand on students' understanding of the content and processes of these curriculum areas; introduce them to useful and appropriate teaching strategies; introduce them to children's thinking and learning appropriate to these areas; increase their knowledge and understanding of common curricula; explore ways of integrating diverse ideas and presenting broad learning experiences to students; introduce students to methods of assessment, planning lessons, group organisation and management, resources and materials; and stimulate ideas and skills in planning, implementation and evaluation of programs safe teaching practices.
