Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify the factors involved in young children's development and demonstrate the ability to link this knowledge to the development of appropriate plans for individualised groups of children.
Synopsis A comprehensive examination of the critical factors involved in the development of young children 0-12 with particular emphasis on the development of children 0-8 years. Theories relating to the influences of genetic and environmental factors on development will be examined. Topics will include the development of language; the role of play in children's overall development; attachment theories and separation anxiety; parenting styles and their implications; motivation theories and their application in developing children's programs; the development of children's perception of self; the development of locus of control in young children and an introduction to children with special needs.
Assessment Seminar paper: 60%
