Adult learning and teaching -- theories and practices

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should understand the historical context of adult and vocational education and training; have analysed current policies associated with the current adult and vocational education and training and developed the skills required for continuing policy analysis; recognise the diverse nature of adult education provision in a range of educational providers; understand adult learning theories and pedagogies and their applicability to diverse adult learning contexts.
Synopsis This subject will highlight the diversity of contexts in which adult and vocational education is offered - TAFE institutes, community education providers, private providers, workplaces and schools. The place of adult and vocational education and training, as part of an overall imperative of lifelong learning, will be identified and an introduction to the policies shaping this provision provided. In particular, adult learning and teaching practices will be analysed in a variety of adult contexts. These will be analysed according to a number of adult education paradigms and encompass both theories and practices. Opportunities for developing a range of adult educational pedagogies will be highlighted and practised.
