Introduction to computers in education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should understand in general terms the structure, organisation and mode of operation of a computer system; have begun to understand and appreciate the role of computers in education; have developed user skills necessary for the effective use of the computer; possess a basic understanding of the concepts underlying word processing, Logo, databases, problem solving and adventure game software, and the rationale underpinning their use in the classroom; and have developed an understanding of the logistics of using computers as part of the teaching and learning process.

Synopsis This subject is designed to provide students with an introduction to the issues and practices regarding the use of computer technology in the classroom. It develops the student's personal computer literacy and awareness, and builds the student's awareness of the pedagogical issues surrounding computers in education. Students will explore a range of issues and practices in, and attitudes towards, computers in education as well as developing skill in the use of word processing, databases, Logo, problem solving and adventure game software. The subject will include reference to ongoing research in the field and students will be expected to complete a research essay, practical work and an examination.

Assessment Folio of practical work (1500 words): 20%
* Research essay (2000 words): 30%
* Examination: 50%
