LOTE methodology and practice

* Prerequisites: EDN1795, EDN2795, EDN3005 (for Bachelor of Education students only) and a major post-Year 12 or its equivalent in a language other than English, including students who will finish such a qualification concurrently with this method subject
* Corequisite: EDN4409
* Note: To obtain DSE accreditation as a LOTE teacher it will be necessary to undertake a supervised practicum in teaching of LOTE (minimum 22 days)

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of contemporary research in first and second language acquisition and bilingualism; a knowledge of methods appropriate to primary LOTE teaching; a knowledge of resources appropriate to primary LOTE teaching; a knowledge of assessment and evaluation procedures for LOTE; an ability to develop reading and writing skills in learners who are simultaneously acquiring literacy skills in their first language; a knowledge of the LOTE curriculum including the ability to teach, integrate and reinforce the primary school curriculum through LOTE.

Synopsis This subject seeks to satisfy present Victorian Government and Directorate of School Education guidelines in regard to the introduction of LOTE in the primary school. Students will be assisted to develop specific strategies for teaching a LOTE, including ways of developing learners' literacy and oracy skills, integrating the development of linguistics and socio-cultural knowledge, monitoring learners' progress and performance, selecting and adapting materials and designing units of work. Current issues in LOTE education will be discussed, including distance learning, PALS and the articulation between primary and secondary school LOTE programs.

Assessment Two assignments (1500 words each): 60%
* Research essay (2500-3000 words): 40%
* Hurdle requirement: satisfactory standard in practicum
