Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to enunciate a number of factors affecting classroom administration and organisation; outline the factors affecting the transition of children from the pre-school phase of life to the primary school, and the structure of school programs designed to minimise the trauma of this transition; discuss and compare their off-campus experiences with the experiences of other students, reflecting on the teaching and class management styles they have encountered, exploring why teachers utilise different approaches and strategies; discuss the basic teaching model in terms of framing and formulating lesson aims and objectives, establishing pupil entering behaviour, determining and using instructional aids, sequencing instruction, and evaluating lesson outcomes; demonstrate a basic understanding of concepts central to the notion of `curricula', schooling and education.
Synopsis This subject consists of two complementary strands. Strand `A' introduces students to the fundamental components of a lesson through examination and discussion of a simple teaching model. This strand gives students the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the primary school; engage in extended observation of practicing teachers in functioning classrooms, and to undertake basic lesson planning in both an on-campus and school-based setting (with several sessions taking place in nearby primary schools). Strand `B' is also an on-campus and school-based program which provides students with the opportunity to examine fundamental curriculum and related organisational matters.
