The MPsych (Child and Educational) prepares graduates to practise as educational and child psychologists in schools, hospitals, clinics, and private practices. For more details regarding the role and employment prospects of educational and child psychologists, students should consult the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists, Australian Psychological Society.
The MPsych (Child and Educational) consists of three parts: advanced coursework, supervised practica and research thesis.
The coursework entails (a) the two subjects:
Students undertake two supervised practica, GED1829 and GED1830 (Clinical placements in psychology 1 and 2), details of which are available from the course coordinator, Associate Professor Neville King (telephone 9905 2853).
The research thesis complies with the regulations for the MPsych as laid down in the regulations section of this handbook but must be completed on a topic relevant to the discipline of child and educational psychology. Students should consult with the course coordinator regarding their choice of topic for the thesis.
Application forms are available from the enquiry office, School of Graduate Studies, Clayton campus (telephone 9905 2819). The closing date for applications is usually late in November and selection for the MPsych (Counselling) and MPsych (Child and Educational) may include an interview, usually held in the first two weeks of December. Selection criteria include academic performance plus personal suitability. Referees' reports may be required.
