The course

The Master of Educational Policy and Administration (MEdPA) degree is a coursework degree designed to meet the requirements of educators and administrators who wish to gain higher professional qualifications and expertise in the areas of educational policy and educational administration.

The course for the degree of MEdPA consists of the equivalent of eight coursework subjects. Students may also complete a component of original academic work (equal in weight to up to two subjects). The coursework subjects comprise two compulsory core subjects and subjects which may be selected, as specified in the regulations for the degree, from subjects included for the Master of Educational Studies degree.

Exemptions may be granted for a maximum of two subjects to applicants who have either a BEdSt or equivalent higher degree in this or another university. The subjects and individual academic work must form an integrated program of study to suit the candidate's individual background and needs. The proposed program should be discussed with the appropriate course adviser for approval at the time of applying for candidature. Classes in most subjects will be held late afternoon and evening.

The two compulsory core subjects are GED2880 and GED2881. These provide broad, foundational studies in educational policy and administration. These subjects must be completed in the first year of study by full-time students, and in the first two years of study by part-time students. They can also be studied by distance mode.

The elective subjects are normally chosen from the lists of policy and administration subjects. In certain circumstances, up to two subjects may be chosen from the complete list of MEdSt subjects. Research subjects listed in the MEdSt schedule would also be appropriate for this degree.

Objectives

The objectives of the MEdPA course are to provide students with knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to:

Selection and enrolment

Whilst the specific regulations governing the degree are set out elsewhere, in general terms to be eligible for admission applicants must hold either an approved three-year bachelor degree and an approved fourth year of study or an approved four-year bachelor degree. The course may be taken either full-time or part-time and it is expected that full-time candidates will complete all requirements within two years whilst part-time candidates will complete within four years.

Details of all subjects available for the degree of MEdPA follow the course information in this handbook. By resolution of the faculty board, each subject of the degree is offered conditionally upon there being a sufficient demand for it from enrolling students in any given year and conditionally on appropriate staff being available.
