The Graduate Diploma in Educational Policy and Administration
(GradDipEPA) is a coursework degree designed to meet the requirements of
teachers, educators and administrators who wish to gain higher professional
qualifications and expertise in the areas of educational policy and educational
administration.
The course for the degree of GradDipEPA consists of four coursework subjects.
These comprise two compulsory core subjects and two other subjects which may be
selected, as specified in the regulations for the degree, from subjects
included in the Master of Educational Studies degree.
The two compulsory core subjects are GED2880 and GED2881. These provide broad,
foundational studies in educational policy and administration.
The objectives of the GradDipEPA course are to provide students with
knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to:
- appreciate that there are numerous approaches to the theory and practice
of educational policy and administration, appreciate distinctions between the
major positions, and develop a critical attitude towards them;
- be able to locate matters of relevance to their own educational practice
within the broader context of educational governance, policy and administration;
- develop an understanding of important concepts in the management of
educational institutions, such as leadership, power, organisation, educational
change and governance;
- develop an understanding of educational governance and reform;
- acquire techniques of scholarly enquiry in the field of educational
policy and administration, and be able to apply theoretical understanding to
practical situations, and become competent in the exercise of appropriate
administrative skills;
- reflect on their own practice in the light of course content, and to
identify problems and issues about which critical questions need to be asked
and answers sought.
While the specific regulations governing the degree are set out
elsewhere, in general terms to be eligible for admission applicants must hold
either an approved three-year bachelor degree and an approved fourth year of
study or an approved four-year bachelor degree. The course may be taken either
full-time or part-time and it is expected that full-time candidates will
complete all requirements within one year while part-time candidates will
complete them within two years.
