This course is designed to develop knowledge, skills and uses of
computers in education to establish a practising teacher as a proficient user
of computers in education and as a leader in the school community for the uses
of and the management of computers in education. The normal entry requirement
is an approved degree or three-year diploma and a recognised teaching
qualification. The course is normally offered over two years part-time by
distance education. Prospective students must have access to a computer and
should be able to access a modem.
The objectives of the Graduate Diploma of Education (Computers in
Education) course are to provide students with:
- an awareness of computing as an intellectual discipline;
- an awareness of current issues in educational computing and related
fields;
- an awareness of the wider impact of computing;
- an ability to adapt the educational use of computers to the individual
needs of different students;
- a facility with the educational application of computing;
- an understanding of the implications of computers in society for
education, teaching and the curriculum, including issues of gender, equity and
participation;
- an awareness of the potentialities of computers in education and the
corresponding effect on their role as teachers;
- a facility as computer users in order to enhance the learning experience
for children.
Students should have developed skills to be able to:
- integrate computers into the learning environment and syllabus into the
classroom;
- advise the school council and principal on equipment, software and
facilities;
- advise on, supervise and coordinate the initiation, maintenance and
evaluation of uses of computers in the school;
- encourage staff development in the uses of computers in education;
- be involved in on-the-job training and in-service sessions for staff at
the school.
The course consists of the following eight six-credit-point subjects:
First semester
- GEC8612 Introduction to computing in schools
- GEC8620 Computer-mediated communication
Second semester
- GEC8613 Computer programming for education
- GEC8614 Evaluation of educational software
First semester
- GEC8615 Technology in society
- GEC8616 Computer use in educational management
Second semester
- GEC8617 Computers-in-education project
- GEC8618 Facilitating computers in education
