Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know a number of research approaches in information systems; be able to critically evaluate the current status of information systems; and appreciate the need to keep up to date with research and innovative approaches in information systems.

Synopsis This subject is designed for those students who are considering progressing to the honours year. Information systems as a discipline. Research methods for information systems. Systems theory: history. Systems dynamics: assumptions, aims, applications, feedback, causal diagrams, flow diagrams; information theory; cybernetics. Systems models of organisation design theory: theories and models of design. Current directions in information systems practice and their theoretical foundations: strategic inter-organisational systems, data warehousing, soft computing, multimedia.

Assessment Written (3000 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 60%
