Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know the basic concepts and technical requirements for the development of geographical information systems (GIS); understand how GIS technology is used in practice, and how and why current approaches to their use and development have evolved; be able to identify potential applications for GIS technology and analyse the opportunities and problems which the application presents; and recognise the strengths and weaknesses of GIS as solutions to business problems.
Synopsis The subject aims to introduce students to the key basic principles and techniques used in the development of geographical information systems. It has a particularly strong focus on the application of GIS in practice and the evolution of approaches to their development and use. The main topics addressed include introduction to GIS concepts, basic hardware, software and data requirements for GIS development, evolution of GIS technology, key areas of application of GIS in practice, issues in the management of GIS, the organisational role of GIS, and emerging trends in GIS development and usage.
