Objectives At the completion of this unit students will be able to frame hypotheses and design algorithms, software and/or experiments to test these hypotheses; be able to collect, analyse and interpret data and report on their research results in oral and written presentations; and appreciate the principles and methods of scientific research.
Synopsis The honours program provides students with the first opportunity for in-depth research and study in areas of interest to them. Students who have completed forty-eight points or more of third-year subjects related to software development and who have achieved a credit average or above, are eligible for admission to the honours program. The program has two components: twenty-four points of coursework and a twenty-four-point project. The guide to the honours program, which is available from the department at any time, provides detailed advice and instructions about the project components and available subjects. For the project, each student is associated with a supervisor who advises on coursework and research. A list of supervisors and brief descriptions of their proposed projects are available from the department. Students can discuss any project that they find interesting with the listed project supervisor. They may also bring their own topics to potential supervisors or negotiate with supervisors for possible redefinition of existing projects. Honours students are expected to attend and participate in the seminar program run by the department throughout the year.
