Community information (archives, records and librarianship)

Objectives At the completion of this subject, students should understand the diversity of `community information' within the information professions; analyse the recordkeeping and information transfer requirements in community organisations and by individuals; critically examine and apply information models to community information requirements and understand and be able to respond to sensitivities of particular community groups towards the sharing of or access to information.

Synopsis This subject is focused on archival, recordkeeping and information transfer needs and services in the community at large, including recordkeeping in community organisations, archives in a multicultural society, the archives of women's and minority groups, oral history and documentation programs, and the role of library services. It includes some comparative overseas case studies; community involvement programs of government, corporate and collecting archival institutions in Australia; and the role of public libraries and museums. A program of guest speakers and visits to community organisations, archival, library and other relevant institutions complements the subject.

Assessment Three project-based assignments (25% each): 75%
