Library and information services to ethnic minority communities

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have an informed understanding of the principles underlying the provision of library and information services to ethnic minority communities and an awareness of the implementation of such policies in Australia and a range of other countries.

Synopsis A study of the development of library and information services to ethnic minority communities and the role of national, state, local, formal and informal agencies in the provision of such services. The identification of library and information needs of these communities, in particular those from non-English speaking backgrounds. Problems of library provision and services to ethnic minority communities. Comparisons with parallel library developments in other countries, eg Canada and selected European countries. Visits to libraries and other relevant agencies in the Melbourne area providing such services.

Assessment Two essays: 50%
* Seminar participation and presentation: 50%
