Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate competence in applying major tools currently used in bibliographic organisation, be familiar with the most important concepts of bibliographic organisation at the Australian and international levels, and be aware of the historical background - both Australian and in other countries - of bibliographic organisation.

Synopsis This subject examines the essentials of bibliographic organisation in libraries. The seminars introduce students to basic concepts of bibliographic organisation by examining the nature of bibliographic data, descriptive cataloguing practice, and standard methods of subject access to library materials. The practical sessions concentrate on instruction in the standard tools currently used in libraries for organising collections. LAR4070 is a prerequisite for LAR4080. Both must normally be taken in the same year.

Assessment Essay: 30%
