Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to understand the basis for database systems; capable of planning, designing and implementing database systems; familiar with hierarchical, network and relational data models; and capable of using SQL and other systems for management of the systems.
Synopsis This subject is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts necessary for the planning, design, use and implementation of database systems. The main topics covered include motivation for the database approach, conceptual modelling, coverage of logical data models (hierarchical, network and relational data models) and the use of SQL and other facilities provided by database management systems.
