Objectives Students completing this subject should be able to contrast the relative strengths and weaknesses of distributed database systems; be able to design and implement a DDBMS from a supplied case description; be familiar with the components of a client-server database system; be able to use a fourth generation language to develop a multi-user client-server database system and possess an understanding of the special issues of distributed database applications as they relate to mobile client platforms.
Synopsis Distributed database systems: logical distributed database design, distributed query optimisation, distributed concurrency control, recovery, integrity and security, and administration. Client-server application development: client-server database architecture, application development using 4GL and GUI tools, connectivity protocols and standards. Mobile database systems: mobile database architecture, protocols to support mobile databases, mobile transaction management.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 40%
