Objectives Students completing this subject will be able to describe various categories of business information systems and their role in an organisation; define and apply each of the steps in a system development lifecycle (SDLC) in terms of its objectives and relationship to the other activities in the SDLC; apply traditional and prototyping approaches to systems analysis.
Synopsis Introduction to business information systems. The systems development lifecycle illustrated with case studies: planning and problem definition; evaluation and feasibility study; modelling of processes and data of current and new systems; testing and evaluation. Analysis tools; information gathering techniques - interview and questionnaire; organisation charts; decision tables; data flow diagrams; documentation standards; data dictionary; prototyping, CASE tools.
Assessment Two assignments: 40%
* Examination (3 hours): 60%
