Objectives At the completion of the subject, students should be able to analyse the requirements for the hardware and software components of multi-processor embedded-computer systems; design embedded computer systems that will solve a complex signal processing or discrete-time control problems; and test and evaluate the performance of embedded computer systems.

Synopsis This core third-year subject builds upon earlier circuit design and systems subjects, introducing an understanding of complex hardware interfaces and signal processing components, and an understanding of the analysis and design of multi-processor embedded-computer systems. The syllabus covers: multiprocessor bus structures, VME, ISA, EISA, PCI, Multibus II; multiprocessor interrupts, bus contention; complex hardware interfaces, intelligent peripheral controllers, and signal-processing components; and application of CAD tools to the analysis and design of multiprocessor systems.

Assessment Practical work and assignments: 50%
* Written examination (2 hours): 50%
