Objectives At the completion of the subject, students should be able to understand the analysis and design of single CPU-based embedded systems; select the topology and implementation methods for a CPU-based system to solve a given DSP or control problem; and design, construct and test CPU-based systems of moderate complexity.
Synopsis This subject, a continuation of DGS2110, deals with the introduction of controlling microprocessors into digital circuits. The syllabus includes: top-down design techniques for digital systems; CPU and microcomputer structure; CPU data path and control circuit; design of single CPU-based systems for DSP and discrete-time control; design of A/D and D/A conversion, signal conditioning, and single-CPU memory interface; use of FPGAs; application of CAD tools to the analysis and design of single-CPU systems.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60%
