Data communications and computer networks

Objectives On completion of the subject, students should be able to understand the principles of computer networks architecture and operation; analyse communication methods and protocols and, where appropriate, make a decision on the feasibility and complexity of their implementation in a given computer network; and apply the key principles of data communications to the design and development of small and medium scale data communication networks.

Synopsis This subject introduces the topics of data communication and networking. Topics include basic concepts and principles of data transmission, major components of data communication systems, communication software, data link controls, introduction to network architecture, open system interconnection model (OSI) and local area networks.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50%
* Practical work and laboratory work: 50%
