Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to model various communication topologies; understand various measures of data communication network performance; use simulation packages for modelling and performance measurement; and make recommendations for network performance improvement.
Synopsis To provide students with a knowledge of models of, and the tools and techniques for, measuring the performance of data communication networks for the purpose of optimising network performance. Topics include the following: data communication network hierarchical configuration; queuing theory; elements of tele-traffic engineering; blocking delay; throughput; utilisation; network modelling and performance analysis of both circuit-switched networks and packet-switched networks; network traffic controls; network design using simulation packages; network management tools and methodologies.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60%
