Electronic document operations

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the function and use of several standard electronic document transfer, storage and access methods; perform basic markup of documents using the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) model; discuss the role of electronic publishing formatting and its implication for information management; and demonstrate knowledge of issues associated with electronic publishing.

Synopsis This subject enables students to explore issues associated with electronic documents. Students will be made aware of a range of electronic document transfer technologies, including FAX and EDI. Issues such as ASCII, HTML, SGML and Postscript formatting of documents will be discussed. Compression techniques will be discussed briefly. Issues related to standards (eg ODA, SGML, Text Encoding Initiative) will be explored. The impact of format on retrieval and storage will be considered. Possible future developments will be discussed. Practical work will deal with the use of markup techniques.
