Bachelor of Computing/Bachelor of Education

Peninsula campus

Normally the Bachelor of Computing degree and the Bachelor of Education degree are each of three year's duration. When the degrees are taken in combination, students are able to complete both courses in four years full-time study at a normal course load for each. On completion of this degree, graduates are eligible for employment as teachers and will bring to this career specialist computing knowledge and skills. They may, however, choose to work as computing professionals in the analysis, design and construction of computer-based systems, with special knowledge in the field of education.

The computing component involves a major in applications development and aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to enable them to analyse a wide variety of commercial problems, and to design, construct and implement computerised information systems that can be used to solve these problems. The applications development major is well suited to those who wish to develop a broad appreciation of commercial computing, although graduates find employment in a wide variety of jobs, typical careers including computer consultant, computer programmer, systems analyst/programmer, systems analyst and systems designer. A range of teaching methods is employed within the course, including computer laboratory sessions which help students develop competency in the use of a variety of programming languages and software packages.

To satisfy the education component of the course students must complete the sequences in education studies and teaching and curriculum. Subjects in education studies will focus on teaching and children's learning within a social setting. Examples include images of education, education and change, education and the individual. The teaching and curriculum sequence will cover the key learning areas of language, studies of society and environment, science, educational computing, mathematics, health and physical education, arts and technology.

A practical program associated with these teaching and curriculum areas will provide experiences in primary school and other appropriate settings. The aim of the education program is to produce a confident, competent teacher who is also a well-educated person with a knowledge of the theoretical foundation of education and the necessary professional skills.

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the Victorian Certificate of Education or its equivalent. Within the Victorian Certificate of Education, a grade average of D in English at levels 3 and 4 is required and applicants must have satisfactorily completed any two units of VCE mathematics.

Students are referred to the Faculty of Education handbook for a complete outline of the structure of the double degree.
