General

The aim of this course is to provide a flexible alternative for busy professionals with restricted time horizons who require personal development in the management of human resources. The Executive Certificate in Human Resources is offered by distance education by the School of Business and Electronic Commerce or on-campus by the Department of Business Management and enables students to individually tailor programs to meet their own or employer requirements.

Course objectives

On completion of the course students should:

• have developed appropriate expertise in human resource issues and tasks relevant to their needs;
• have the ability to link these activities to the needs of their vocation or employment;
• understand the importance of an effective grounding in human resource theory and application;
• have fostered skills which enable them to successfully continue in their managerial careers and/or to articulate into higher degree studies.

Venue

This course is offered by distance education at the Gippsland campus and on-campus at the Caulfield campus.

Duration

Two semesters of part-time study. Normally a student will study two subjects per semester.

Course structure

All students will satisfactorily complete any four from the following list of subjects providing that prerequisites have been satisfactorily completed. Subjects with the alpha prefix of GBU are offered by distance education, subjects with the alpha prefix of MGM are offered on-campus:

• MGM9601 Managing people and organisations[*]

• GBU8002 Human resource management or
• MGM9851 Human resource management issues*

• GBU8038 Employment relations policy and practice or
• MGM9831 Managing employee relations*

• GBU8057 Organisational change and development or
• MGM9720 Managing in a changing environment*

• GBU8009 Training and development
• GBU8034 Industrial relations
• GBU8036 Issues in labour economics
• GBU8037 Industrial law
• GBU8039 Strategic human resource management
• GBU8041 Contemporary issues in employment relations
