Course code: BDBU
Course director: Ms Alison Dean
This course replaces two former diploma courses, Diploma of Business (General Administration) and Diploma of Business (Productivity Management). It provides a tertiary education channel for supervisory and administrative personnel whose knowledge is largely self-developed. It is designed to provide a broad knowledge base in business and develop in students the management skills to recognise and implement improvement opportunities within organisations.
The Diploma of Business fully articulates into the Bachelor of Business program and it aims to enable students to grow intellectually, and to update skills and knowledge that contributes to economic prosperity.
On completion of this course students will have:

First semester
Elective subjects will be drawn from the Bachelor of Business with the exception of GCO1859 (Computers in business). Students who do not have computer skills will be strongly advised to complete this subject in year one, semester two and choose any other elective (where prerequisites are met) from the Bachelor of Business.
For all other students, the following elective streams will be suggested:
Business law
Satisfactory completion of the VCE with English, units 3 and 4, and Maths, units 1 and 2.
Applicants may also satisfy entrance requirements on the basis of qualifications deemed to be the equivalent of the above VCE. TAFE qualifications (eg the first year of a TAFE associate diploma or a TAFE qualification that satisfies the first year of a TAFE associate diploma) or comparable Year 12 qualifications including International Baccalaureate or approved tertiary-level study completed in Victoria, other States of Australia or overseas may satisfy entry requirements.
Those who have reached at least twenty-three years of age in the year of application and who have either not satisfied the above entrance requirements or have done so more than three years prior to their application, may apply for entry. These applicants will be required to sit an admissions test and undertake other assessments as prescribed.
Successful completion of at least two open learning subjects may satisfy entry requirements.
It is recommended that students should have access to a personal computer. (Please note that the School of Business and Electronic Commerce operates in an IBM-compatible Windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff.
A student will be exempted from any subject where an equivalent subject has already been completed at post-secondary level. In such cases a student must select an additional elective subject(s) in substitution for the subject(s) exempted. Application for credit for partially completed courses will be determined on an individual basis.
It is essential that subjects submitted for credit and exemption fit the philosophy and principles of this diploma course of study. Subjects studied more than ten years ago are regarded as beyond a reasonable time limit for applicability and generally will not be considered for credit/exemption.
The Federal Government provides funds to assist industry to improve productivity through the development of skills in education-industry partnerships, and at the same time enable employees to engage in tertiary education. The School of Business and Electronic Commerce is able to access these funds by forming partnerships with employers to facilitate employee participation in the Diploma programs. Costs are shared and, in this arrangement, the School of Business and Electronic Commerce offers flexibility in delivery mode.
