Supraorganisational systems

Objectives On completion of the subject students will have defined and have the capacity to explain internal business structures and processes in business operating with electronic commerce; a sound understanding of the role and function of value adding in business processes at the inter-, extra- and supra-organisational levels; acquired a comprehensive knowledge about industry sectors, sector structures and processes; developed a understanding of supraorganisational communication and its role in business practices using electronic commerce; practised the application of a range of skills in applying electronic commerce.

Synopsis The subject provides an introductory overview of supraorganisational systems and the practices of global business. The emphasis will be on understanding the design and processes operating in business at the supraorganisational level and the development of business strategies to implement effective global business practice within these new structures utilising electronic commerce practices, building on the skills introduced in GBU1601 (Introduction to electronic commerce). Other issues include the role of value adding in the supraorganisational context of electronic commerce; internal integration; industry sector structures, processes and the value chain; inter and multi-organisational systems, including the integration of key processes across organisational boundaries; extra-organisational systems, including EFTPOS, home banking and shopping and electronic service delivery via public kiosks.

Assessment Assignment 1 (2000 words): 20%
* Assignment 2 (Research report - 2500 words): 30%
* Examination (3 hours) 50%
* Successful completion of this subject will be contingent on the student demonstrating a satisfactory level of performance in each element of assessment.

Prescribed texts

There is no prescribed text for this course. A reading list will be supplied with the study package for distance education students. This package will also include a book of readings. On-campus students will have access to the distance education materials and will be provided with comprehensive reading lists.
