Introduction to electronic commerce

Objectives On completion of the subject students should be able to define and explain electronic commerce in terms of the interrelationships between email, EDI, EFT, bar-coding, electronic catalogues, smart cards, CALS and other associated electronic processes and systems; describe the nature of communications change and the place of electronic commerce in changing business processes in the 1990s and beyond; describe the development of electronic commerce in Australia and overseas with particular emphasis on the role and importance of international standards; identify the major legal and security issues affecting senders and receivers of electronic communications; recognise the issues of ethics, privacy and the impact on the workplace which will influence the widespread adoption of electronic commerce technologies; and identify major contemporary global trends in the use of electronic commerce

Synopsis The subject provides a comprehensive overview of the various concepts and the interrelationships between email, EDI, EFT, bar-coding, electronic catalogues, smart cards, CALS and other associated electronic processes and systems. Developments and issues in electronic commerce in Australia and overseas will be examined with particular emphasis on the role and importance of international standards, ethics, privacy legal and security issues and impact on the workplace. The place of electronic commerce in the development of communications and business communications will be addressed. Major contemporary global trends in the adoption of electronic commerce technologies will be identified.

Assessment Assignment 1 (case study - 2000 words): 20%

* Examination (open book - 3 hours): 50%
