Objectives On completion of this subject students should have a well-developed understanding of the principles and techniques necessary to retrieve and analyse data relevant to their research; a thorough grounding in the practical computing skills required for data analysis and thesis writing; the skills required for communicating research results; and a sound knowledge of the key issues and principles of data-analysis and report-writing.
Synopsis This subject focuses on the use of graphical and multivariate data analysis techniques to communicate information derived from large scale survey data. Students integrate desktop and mainframe information technology to analyse data from a variety of surveys, including the Australian Workplace Industrial Relations Survey; the National Social Science Survey; and the Work Orientations module of the International Social Survey Project. Teaching strategies include weekly workshop sessions dealing with the principles of data analysis; practical computer laboratory sessions; and individual and team-based exercises.
Assessment: Written (four 750-word exercises and one 2500-word report): 100%
