Objectives At the completion of this subject students should understand the substance of organisation and management theories. They should be able to classify, analyse, and compare these theories and judge their strengths and weaknesses.
Synopsis Lectures begin by examining deterministic theories of organisation which argue that organisation is shaped in various ways by social, technical, and economic forces. They then move on to consider a contrary theoretical position, namely, that organisation is shaped by management strategy. They conclude by discussing different views on management planning, decision-making and control.
