International trade policy

* Prerequisites: ECO4650 and ECO3690

Objectives On completion of this subject students will be able to analyse the effects of international trade on real income and its distribution in various market structures; have a sound understanding of the allocation and welfare effects of commercial policies; possess the skills necessary to evaluate critically contemporary innovations in Australia's trade policies.

Synopsis Topics include the gains and costs of trading internationally; static and dynamic welfare effects of protection; the political economy of international trade policy; optimum policies in the presence of market power, uncertainty, and other market imperfections; trade policy instruments; the interactions of trade policy and environmental policy; strategies for trade liberalisation including regional trade agreements.

Assessment In-course assessment: 30%
* Examination (3 hours): 70%
