Objectives On completion of this subject the students should be able to design and implement a significant research project and particularly one which relates to operational management practices; to demonstrate the analytical skills involved in determining the operational process or the technology which is capable of securing improved performance for the organisation; to show evidence of their awareness of leading operational management practices and to demonstrate investigative and problem solving skills; and to have familiarity with research methodologies appropriate to management in industry and services.
Synopsis Students have the option of undertaking a research project only, or of undertaking an overseas study tour. The research project will be designed to enable the student to prepare an effective report based on research of the benefits to a manufacturing/service company of adopting, or enhancing an existing technology process or system. That technology could include one or more of the operational improvement technologies (TQM, JIT, MRP2 etc.). The project would be agreed to in a cooperative manner between the student's workplace supervisor and the course leader for this diploma and supervised by a research supervisor.
