Basic statistics and computing for social sciences

Objectives On successful completion of this subject student should be able to acquire an informed familiarity, both theoretical and practical, with the basic stages of a research project; improve their proficiency in oral and written reporting skills; develop their capacity for independent achievement of goals; extend their ability to critically evaluate research reports; and prepare themselves for undertaking postgraduate research.

Synopsis Use of published data - especially Australian Bureau of Statistics, eg labour force, demographic profiles etc. Introduction to statistical analysis (chi-square, t-test and correlation, ie covering both parametric and non-parametric statistics). In conjunction with this subject students will use computers for statistical analysis.

Assessment Progressive assessment: 70%
* Examination: 30%
